Containing what was once a vital route for 18th and 19th century fur traders, Grand Portage National Monument was a path that bypassed the last few treacherous miles of the Pigeon River before it reached Lake Superior. Today, visitors can hike up all or part of the 8.5-mile path that runs where the portage trail once did or opt for a trip to the Heritage Center, where historical exhibits and artifacts are on display. The park also contains a number of log structures and outdoor areas that have been decorated to appear as they would have during the time this portage was used. Ranger talks and guided short tours offer the best way to get a taste of this site's important history, both to Native American and European fur traders that once frequented this path. The monument runs a northwest-southeast course from the United States-Canada border to the shore of Grand Portage Bay in Lake Superior.
Trails open daily dawn - dusk. Heritage center hours vary, check website for details.
Adults $3; Children 15 and under are free.
